Linville Falls, NC

Linville Falls is located off the Blue Ridge Parkway at mile post 316.4 near Jonas Ridge.  There will be signs to the parking area on the Parkway.  The hike is 1.5 miles on Erwin's View Trail for views of the 45 ft. waterfall.

Mention Linville Falls to anyone around here and they have probably heard of it.  This may be the most popular waterfall in North Carolina.  It is definitely one of the most crowded and for good reasons.  There are three main trails.  Two take you to many overlooks and the other up the river to the base.  The parking area contains a visitor center with all the information you will need.

When we arrived at the falls the parking lot was full of cars and buses from children on field trips.  We took the Erwin's View Trail which takes you to the many observation points and skipped the trail to the base as we had the dog with us.  Which from past experiences I've learned it is no fun trying to get her to hop around on rocks through the water..

I hadn't visited Linville Falls since I was kid, but it was just as beautiful as I remembered.  It is hard to find anything more scenic than the Linville River flowing through the rocky gorge.  You could spend all day here soaking up the views.  It is really amazing how the river winds through the gorge and plunges over the 45 foot main drop.  The hike is fairly easy and full of great sights along the way.  If you have never been to Linville Gorge, you are missing out.  I promise you will not be disappointed.
